Competitive Events
HOSA's Competitive Events Program brings health careers education to life through rigorous testing of knowledge, performance, skill, and leadership capabilities aimed at developing, encouraging, and recognizing the brightest future health care professionals. HOSAs competitive events are divided into six (6) different categories which are Health Science Events, Health Professions Events, Emergency Preparedness Events, Leadership Events, Teamwork Events, and Recognition Events.
HOSA members should believe in the competitive events program, not because of the awards to be received in competition, but because of the feeling of accomplishment and confidence gained in preparing for competition. HOSA does not provide competition for competition's sake; rather, HOSA provides a competitive events program as a means of recognizing those students who are willing to pursue excellence by preparing for competition and having the determination to attend a conference and demonstrate the competencies gained through the health occupations program.
You'll notice that Georgia HOSA does not offer every event that you will see on the National HOSA website. It is important that you always check this page for the events that Georgia HOSA offers rather than the National site.
Preparing Students for Competitive Events
Members interested in the Competitive Events Program should follow ten steps in preparing for competition.
- Talk with the HOSA Chapter Advisor and let him/her know their interest in entering a competitive event at regional and/or state conferences.
- Review the National Competitive Events Program and the list of Georgia HOSA offered events and select the event that is consistent with their career objective.
- Visit www.georgiahosa.org for the current edition of the specific event guidelines, and specifically concentrate on the "General Rules and Regulations" in preparing for the event.
- Study the detailed guidelines and the judge's rating sheet(s) to know the criteria by which competitors are evaluated.
- Practice, practice, practice and practice the event at the local chapter level before competing at a district or state conference.
- Talk with other members who participated in competition previously and gain as much as possible from their experiences.
- Ask the chapter Advisor to conduct event simulations in the classroom to allow all members to have an event experience.
- Know all rules and procedures for the event in which they are entering to avoid disqualification or point deductions.
- Enter region and/or state competition and carefully review all instructions to event participants.
- Enjoy the competition because the real benefit of competition was realized in the preparation.
Region Competitions
Region competition is the first way to get involved in the National Competitive Events program and is required for qualification for many events at the State Leadership Conference.
This year Georgia HOSA members will take part in the region competitive events program via online testing. The top 10 in each event in each region will advance to the State Leadership Conference.
Click here for more information about Region Competitions.
State Leadership Conference
The State Leadership Conference (SLC) is an exciting opportunity for HOSA members to show off their hard work. The top 10 in each region for each event make it to the SLC and will take a round 1 test (if the event calls for this). Some events do not require students to enter at the region level such as Career Health Display, Job Seeking Skills, etc.
National Leadership Conference
The National Leadership Conference (NLC) is the culmination of the HOSA member's school year. Students will get to be among over 8,000 HOSA members from across the United States. The top 3 at the SLC will advance to the NLC to represent the peach state.
Click here for more information regarding the NLC.
Georgia HOSA's List of Events
As stated above, Georgia HOSA does not offer every single event offered at the National level. The Georgia HOSA competitive events management team does not offer events at the SLC that had less than 5participants/teams at the previous year's SLC. This does not include the Recognition Events category. The event will stay out of rotation for 2 years and then will come back the third year. This will continue to make sure we focus all effort and attention of the needs and desires of Georgia HOSA members. The PDF will list those events out of rotation along with their return date.
Please see the PDF file below for a comprehensive flow list of the Georgia HOSA competitive events.
Complete list coming soon. Please check back regularly.
