Chapter Spotlight
Georgia HOSA recognizes the chapters that are active in their community by putting them on the Georgia HOSA Website; once a month. There is no requirement of what type of activity it may be, but it has to be involving your local chapter of HOSA. 2010 Talent Show for Cystic Fibrosis
Description of Event
On February 11, 2010 the HOSA chapter hosted a talent show to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. This was a very successful event. We had elementary, middle, and high school contestants to participate in this wonderful event. The competition was divided up into three categories: Intermediate, Junior, and Senior. The elementary school did well for their age. The junior division made up the middle school. The biggest group of all was our very own high school division they made the crowd go wild. Each division each had a first place, second place, and a third place. The intermediate and senior division gave their money price back to us to donate to Cystic Fibrosis. We also had a guest speaker who was Erin Patrick, she has Cystic Fibrosis. She told the audience about how she lives her daily life with this disease. She is 18 years old and she is a senior at Southeast Bulloch high school. We collected money by selling tickets, concessions, and people paying at the door and selling the Cystic Fibrosis t-shirt. This event was so successful that we raised $1,739.55 for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This was a wonderful night thanks to all HOSA officers and our advisor Mrs. Sharon Pye.

A Christmas She Won't Forget!
Description of Event
Morgan Campbell, a first year student in the Healthcare program at Chattooga High School, learned CPR approximately two weeks before Christmas break. She took the CPR course in Mrs. Kathy Daniels Healthcare Science Class. No one could foresee how important this CPR class would later prove to be.
This young heroine was on a trip over the long break with her friends. Their grandmother had a seizure and suddenly stopped breathing. The teenagers called 911 to send an ambulance their way.
The 911 operator said that is she wasnt breathing to give her CPR, Morgan said. I stood there scared for what seemed like about three minutes.
Despite freezing up those few minutes, Morgan recalled the CPR training she had recently taken, and started the life saving technique. Luckily, after being administered CPR, the grandmother began breathing again. When the ambulance arrived, the EMT told Morgan that is she hadnt administered CPR to the woman; she wouldnt have made it to the hospital alive.
Morgan is a freshman at CHS and plans to become a Pediatrician.

Riverdale HOSA and CBS/Cool Schools Live Broadcast
Description of Event
The Riverdale HOSA chapter was chosen by CBS News to be featured in the Cool Schools Segment. During this segment Vice President Amarachi Ibekwe spoke about the benefits of the healthcare science program and HOSA. HOSA Signage was featured along with the chapter's membership display board. This interview provided an excellent opportunity to feature HOSA and the benefits for all it's members. Students interviewed during the broadcast spoke passionately about their love for healthcare and the necessity to enroll in healthcare science programs. In the end CBS was able to capture on camera the love our students have for our programs and how our programs work to bridge the gap created by the shortage of healthcare workers. Lastly, during the interview I had the opportunity to speak to the camera man. He is a former student from AR Johnson High School and spoke very highly about the HOSA program offered there. Truly we can see HOSA'S far reaching effects.

Helmet Safety Program Is Off To a Great Start
Description of Event
To help prevent head injuries from biking, skating, scootering and skateboarding, Chestatee HOSA has formed a partnership with Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall County to complete a series of Helmet Safety Programs. In the next two months, 37 Chestatee HOSA members will work with volunteers from the Gainesville Police Department, Hall County Sheriffs Department, Hall County Fire Services and Northeast Georgia Medical Center to help educate over 3,100 second grade students from 26 elementary schools throughout Gainesville and Hall County, distributing over 2000 helmets. This school-based injury prevention program is being held to increase the awareness of elementary age children of the need to consistently wear helmets while participating in wheeled sports as well as the ability to have their own properly fitted helmet.
In our emergency rooms at Northeast Georgia Medical Center during the fourth quarter of 2007, at least 65% of children admitted with bicycle accident injuries to the head and face were not wearing a helmet.
Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall County is funded by the Healthy Journey II Campaign of The Medical Center Foundation, which includes donations by Northeast Georgia Medical Center employees through the W.A.T.C.H. (We Are Targeting Community Healthcare) employee giving club. This partnership allows HOSA students to actively participate in a community based initiative geared toward reducing life threatening head injuries in a high risk age group of children. There are SAFE KIDS groups in many areas throughout the state, making this type of community service opportunity available to HOSA groups statewide. Its a great example of HOSA at work, making a difference in meeting the healthcare needs of their communitys youngest members!

Jacket Night at Beverly
Description of Event
Recently, our HOSA members participated in Jacket Night at the Beverly Rehabilitation Nursing Center. The 26 HOSA members in attendance represented our school by wearing our school colors, black and gold. The residents at the nursing home received an unexpected visit from our schools mascot, The Yellow Jacket. In addition, two future Yellow Jacket cheerleaders joined the HOSA students. The group began Jacket Night with several cheers and visits from the mascot to the individual resident rooms. Afterwards, the students helped move the patients to the dining room for Bingo. The club members assisted the residents in playing multiple games of Bingo, while also participating in friendly conversations with them. The nursing home residents enjoyed the large amount of involvement and enthusiasm from the HOSA members and most especially the many prizes provided by the HOSA students. Our chapter goal is to continue to promote creative and caring volunteer service to our community.
