Sharing the Joy of Christmas with Others
Description of Event
Members of HOSA as well as FBLA, DECA, and FCCLA held a combined Christmas party on December 12, 2011. The students of these organizations did not want the party to be just about them though. They participated in joint community service projects. Members brought in toiletries to assemble care packages for a woman's shelter and items for a local family in need. They then visited Bryant Nursing Home where they sang Christmas carols with the residents and shared cards they made for them. The members finished out the evening with refreshments, games and prizes. The joy of Christmas was not only brought to the residents of the nursing home or the people receiving the gifts, but also to the members of the CTSOs who participated in the party. They were able to see that the true joy of Christmas is through giving.

Sometimes the Best Medicine is a Good Example
Description of Event
When you come right down to it, success as a healthcare provider is measured by the real changes that occur through improving a persons day to day life. Healthcare Science students at Chestatee High School are learning that lesson in success through their partnership with the Hall County School Nurse program. Students enrolled in the Nursing Essentials course are taught to use audiometers and Snellen eye charts in order to work with the school nurses at the middle and elementary schools to conduct hearing and vision screenings. These initial screenings, tested on kindergarten, 5th grade and 8th grade students often pick up deficiencies that, left undetected, can result in physical and developmental delays.
It is a fantastic opportunity for my healthcare science students because it allows them to directly transfer concepts taught in the classroom that range from anatomy and physiology to growth and development to the use of monitoring devices and then directly apply them to a real life experience, Healthcare Science teacher Allison Wilson said. The students return from these clinical experiences energized and ready to do more. They recall their experience in elementary school when they were on the receiving end of the screening process and want to make this a positive experience for these children, Wilson said. According to student workers, a bonus in this process is that former teachers from elementary and middle school are able to see past students perform in roles that are preparing these young adults to enter the healthcare profession. It is a taste of success that educators and students alike can savor, Wilson said.
Having the Healthcare Science students help the school nurses with the vision and hearing screens is a win-win situation, Hall County School Nurse Program Coordinator Mamie Coker said. In an effort to minimize missed instruction time, the school nurses mass screen about 800 7th and 8th graders in one morning. Coker confirms that these tests would not be possible without the added high school student help. Often time we have a large number of hearing failures when using volunteer screeners without a health care background. At the last screen at Chestatee Academy, we only had a handful of hearing failures and that is a testimony to the quality of screening procedures used by the students, Coker said.
The healthcare challenges within the community are greater than ever before. Healthcare costs continue to rise, more and more people are uninsured and the public health system is strained. Free health screening programs such as the ones afforded to public school children by the school nurses are invaluable when preventive health care seems out of reach for some families.
As this group of 19 students prepare themselves to enter the nursing profession at various levels, they do so with a real understanding that each of them can make important contributions to the health of their community as they continue to seek out opportunities to volunteer. This experience has placed a human face on public health and has shown the impact that school nurses have within the community. After all, sometimes the best medicine is simply a good example.

Orange Out 2011
Description of Event
Centennial High School organized a Pennies for Patients fundraiser to earn money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to put towards researching and finding a cure. Students held a silent auction, collected money all night during the homecoming football game, placed collection jars in each classroom for donations, and hosted a bake sale. All proceeds from these events went towards the fundraiser. In order to raise awareness and inform the student body of the importance of this cause, students gave a quick speech and the school wide pep rally, hung posters, and designated one day of the week to be "Orange Out Day" in which everyone wore this color to support the cause. This event at the school was hugely successful and Centennial reached its goal of raising over $2,000!

Hospital Volunteer Program
Description of Event
This year our HOSA organization began a Hospital Volunteer Program with our local hospital, Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele, GA. This program will continue during the summer and next year. We asked Leonard Carter, Vice-President at the hospital how we could help the hospital. Mr. Carter is on our Advisory Committee. Mr. Carter suggested a Saturday volunteer program. Our HOSA group had eight students that wanted to participate. The students rotate Saturdays working four to eight hours in whatever department needs help that day. The students have the opportunity to work along side a hospital employee. Our picture shows Reico Harvey working with a pharmacist. The second picture shows four of the students that work in the hospital volunteer program, from left to right Lakyn Arnett, Elizabeth McLemore, Cierra Green, and Ashley Butler. To participate with the program the students must go through an orientation that stresses HIPAA. The students also have a drug screen and TB tine test done. This program has given students opportunities to see what working in the hospital is like. It gives the hospital a chance to see the students work ethic and attitude. Also, it is a helping hand to the departments in the hospital that need extra help. It has been a big plus for students and the hospital.

Community Service Project for Colquitt County EMC
Description of Event
C. A. Gray HOSA officers stayed after-school and dressed in their Official HOSA uniforms to serve at a Colquitt County EMC banquet on 09/16/10. This dinner was organized to honor a retiree after many years of service to Colquitt EMC, with over 300 in attendance. The HOSA officers set up the tables and chairs. They laid out the silverware and the desserts. They frequently went around and offered water and tea refills making sure the guests were all well served. The dessert tables were always filled due to the attention of the officers. Fourteen out of the sixteen officers were able to attend and be part of this unique opportunity. You only retire once!
Our objective this year is to spotlight HOSA and our C. A. Gray Jr. High chapter throughout the community as well as with business and industry. We were able to share with the guest what HOSA stands for and what were all about. We were a big hit at this banquet and received a wonderful letter of appreciation from Colquitt EMC. Also, during the banquet officers were complimented on their service, appearance, and maturity.

On February 11, 2010 the HOSA chapter hosted a talent show to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. This was a very successful event. We had elementary, middle, and high school contestants to participate in this wonderful event. The competition was divided up into three categories: Intermediate, Junior, and Senior. The elementary school did well for their age. The junior division made up the middle school. The biggest group of all was our very own high school division they made the crowd go wild. Each division each had a first place, second place, and a third place. The intermediate and senior division gave their money price back to us to donate to Cystic Fibrosis. We also had a guest speaker who was Erin Patrick, she has Cystic Fibrosis. She told the audience about how she lives her daily life with this disease. She is 18 years old and she is a senior at Southeast Bulloch high school. We collected money by selling tickets, concessions, and people paying at the door and selling the Cystic Fibrosis t-shirt. This event was so successful that we raised $1,739.55 for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This was a wonderful night thanks to all HOSA officers and our advisor Mrs. Sharon Pye.

A Christmas She Won't Forget!
Description of Event
Morgan Campbell, a first year student in the Healthcare program at Chattooga High School, learned CPR approximately two weeks before Christmas break. She took the CPR course in Mrs. Kathy Daniels Healthcare Science Class. No one could foresee how important this CPR class would later prove to be.
This young heroine was on a trip over the long break with her friends. Their grandmother had a seizure and suddenly stopped breathing. The teenagers called 911 to send an ambulance their way.
The 911 operator said that is she wasnt breathing to give her CPR, Morgan said. I stood there scared for what seemed like about three minutes.
Despite freezing up those few minutes, Morgan recalled the CPR training she had recently taken, and started the life saving technique. Luckily, after being administered CPR, the grandmother began breathing again. When the ambulance arrived, the EMT told Morgan that is she hadnt administered CPR to the woman; she wouldnt have made it to the hospital alive.
Morgan is a freshman at CHS and plans to become a Pediatrician.

Description of Event
Lakeside High Schools HOSA students donated life on Thursday, September 10, 2009. With 95 attempted donors, the group helped save many local lives. The school was visited by buddy blood drop before the blood drive as an encouragement to donate. Giving blood is extremely important especially for those needing the transfusions. This is the first blood drive of many to come this school year. This is just one of the many ways LHS HOSA gives back to the community. Donate blood, save lives.

Riverdale HOSA and CBS/Cool Schools Live Broadcast
Description of Event
The Riverdale HOSA chapter was chosen by CBS News to be featured in the Cool Schools Segment. During this segment Vice President Amarachi Ibekwe spoke about the benefits of the healthcare science program and HOSA. HOSA Signage was featured along with the chapter's membership display board. This interview provided an excellent opportunity to feature HOSA and the benefits for all it's members. Students interviewed during the broadcast spoke passionately about their love for healthcare and the necessity to enroll in healthcare science programs. In the end CBS was able to capture on camera the love our students have for our programs and how our programs work to bridge the gap created by the shortage of healthcare workers. Lastly, during the interview I had the opportunity to speak to the camera man. He is a former student from AR Johnson High School and spoke very highly about the HOSA program offered there. Truly we can see HOSA'S far reaching effects.

Helmet Safety Program Is Off To a Great Start
Description of Event
To help prevent head injuries from biking, skating, scootering and skateboarding, Chestatee HOSA has formed a partnership with Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall County to complete a series of Helmet Safety Programs. In the next two months, 37 Chestatee HOSA members will work with volunteers from the Gainesville Police Department, Hall County Sheriffs Department, Hall County Fire Services and Northeast Georgia Medical Center to help educate over 3,100 second grade students from 26 elementary schools throughout Gainesville and Hall County, distributing over 2000 helmets. This school-based injury prevention program is being held to increase the awareness of elementary age children of the need to consistently wear helmets while participating in wheeled sports as well as the ability to have their own properly fitted helmet.
In our emergency rooms at Northeast Georgia Medical Center during the fourth quarter of 2007, at least 65% of children admitted with bicycle accident injuries to the head and face were not wearing a helmet.
Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall County is funded by the Healthy Journey II Campaign of The Medical Center Foundation, which includes donations by Northeast Georgia Medical Center employees through the W.A.T.C.H. (We Are Targeting Community Healthcare) employee giving club. This partnership allows HOSA students to actively participate in a community based initiative geared toward reducing life threatening head injuries in a high risk age group of children. There are SAFE KIDS groups in many areas throughout the state, making this type of community service opportunity available to HOSA groups statewide. Its a great example of HOSA at work, making a difference in meeting the healthcare needs of their communitys youngest members!

Jacket Night at Beverly
Description of Event
Recently, our HOSA members participated in Jacket Night at the Beverly Rehabilitation Nursing Center. The 26 HOSA members in attendance represented our school by wearing our school colors, black and gold. The residents at the nursing home received an unexpected visit from our schools mascot, The Yellow Jacket. In addition, two future Yellow Jacket cheerleaders joined the HOSA students. The group began Jacket Night with several cheers and visits from the mascot to the individual resident rooms. Afterwards, the students helped move the patients to the dining room for Bingo. The club members assisted the residents in playing multiple games of Bingo, while also participating in friendly conversations with them. The nursing home residents enjoyed the large amount of involvement and enthusiasm from the HOSA members and most especially the many prizes provided by the HOSA students. Our chapter goal is to continue to promote creative and caring volunteer service to our community.

Wear Pink Day to promote October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2008
Description of Event
Greenbrier High School HOSA promotes October 1, 2008 as Wear Pink Day to kick off the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The first school day in October was established as Wear Pink Day in 2006. Greenbrier students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to wear as much pink as possible. Each year we have expanded to promote the awareness and importance of early detection of this disease. Pink ribbons are handmade and delivered to faculty and staff members by HOSA members the morning of Wear Pink Day. HOSA also encourages all applicable faculty, staff, and community members to receive a regular screening mammogram by scheduling their yearly appointment with the University Hospital Mobile Mammography Unit here at the Greenbrier Campus on November 14, 2008.
